We are always amazed and delighted by the many creative waysGlobal Outreach partners find to provide funding and support in our efforts to spread God’s love and compassion. Over the past few years we have received donations from a variety of sources such as proceeds from groups running an obstacle course, wedding gifts, sewing and selling items, hosting home parties, and Vacation Bible School offerings. This month we introduce to you a business created to fund education in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Every year since 2011, Sarah Bayot has been traveling to visit Congo for Christ in Uvira, DRC as a volunteer with National Community Church mission teams. During her visits, Sarah found that many children lacked the resources to go to school, could not afford to eat every day and didn’t have access to clean water. However, she was constantly moved by the beauty, hope and communal spirit of the people. “Every year I visit the community and every year I see that hope can be made tangible and that resilience is in all of us,” Sarah reflects.
Leaving her job as office manager at National Community Church in Washington DC, and inspired by the joy of the children in Congo, Sarah founded “Kicheko Goods” in 2014. Sarah set out to create beautiful jewelry that helps bridge access to quality education at Mango Tree School for community children who are vulnerable and at risk. Kicheko Goods, meaning “smile or laughter,” uses proceeds from every piece of jewelry sold to fund one month of school for one child. In 2015 and 2016 nearly 1,600 months of scholarships were provided to 71 students. For the 2017—2018 school year the Kicheko scholarship will provide 80 children with a full year of schooling at Mango Tree School. These are children in the very poor community around Congo for Christ who would otherwise be unable to attend school at all. In addition to blessing the children, this generous scholarship helps ensure Mango Tree School is able to pay the teachers and remain financially strong throughout the year.
